Renouncing U.S. citizenship is a formal and serious legal act that must be done voluntarily and in person before a U.S. consular officer outside the United States. The individual must sign an oath of renunciation and demonstrate that the decision is made freely and with full understanding of the consequences. Once approved, a Certificate of Loss of Nationality is issued. The process is generally irreversible except in extremely limited circumstances.
