If my green card is expiring soon, how early should I apply for renewal, and will my status be affected while I wait?

You should file for renewal using Form I-90 about 6 months (180 days) before your Green Card expires.

If your card expires before the new one arrives, USCIS will give you a receipt notice (I-797) extending your Green Card validity, which you can use for work, travel, or proof of status.
