If H1b is a not an immigrant visa, does this mean I have to change my status before I can get green card?

You are right that H-1B is a non-immigrant visa but you don't have to change your status to get a green card

It is a dual intent visa, so you can apply for green card

It is not an immigrant visa but you can apply for a green card while on it. It is allowed

You don't have to change your status. Your employer can sponsor you for a green card
