I was laid off while my employment-based green card process was ongoing. What happens to my case now?

If you are laid off before certain milestones are reached, your employment-based green card process may end entirely. Early stages like PERM and the immigrant petition are employer-specific, so termination usually means the case cannot continue. However, if your immigrant petition has been approved and your adjustment application has been pending for a certain period, limited portability options may exist. Timing is critical, and you should consult an immigration attorney immediately to understand whether any part of your case can be saved.

Losing a job during sponsorship is stressful, but it does not always eliminate future options. Even if the current case cannot continue, an approved petition may preserve a priority date that can be reused by a future employer. In the short term, your focus should be maintaining lawful status, whether through a grace period, change of status, or departure. Acting quickly gives you more flexibility.
