I was brought to the United States through fraud and forced to work under threats and coercion. I am afraid to report the situation because I do not have legal status. I have heard about a T visa for victims of human trafficking. How does this protection work, and what are the key elements I must prove to qualify?

The T visa is available to individuals who are victims of severe forms of human trafficking, including labor or sex trafficking. To qualify, you must demonstrate that you were recruited, transported, or held through force, fraud, or coercion for exploitation. You must also show that you are physically present in the United States as a result of trafficking and that you would suffer extreme hardship if removed. Cooperation with law enforcement is generally required unless you are under a certain age or unable to cooperate due to trauma.

Applicants for a T visa must provide detailed evidence of trafficking, which may include affidavits, law enforcement reports, or medical and psychological documentation. If approved, T visa recipients can obtain work authorization and may apply for permanent residence after several years. The process is sensitive and often requires careful documentation of trauma and exploitation. Protection is intended to support victims while promoting accountability for traffickers.
