I want to travel while my adjustment of status application is pending. Is it safe to leave the U.S.?

Travel while adjustment of status is pending is generally only allowed if you have a valid advance parole document. Leaving the U.S. without advance parole can be considered abandonment of your application. Even with advance parole, reentry is not guaranteed and is subject to inspection at the border.
