I recently moved from Nigeria to the United States and I’m hoping to continue my academic journey here. I want to enroll in a university program, but I’m unsure how my current immigration status affects my ability to study. I also want to know whether my previous coursework can transfer and what steps I need to take to apply. How should someone in my situation start the process?

Your ability to study depends on your current visa or status. Some visas allow full-time study, while others require switching to an F-1 student visa. Checking your eligibility before applying is crucial to avoid violations.

Many U.S. universities require a credential evaluation for foreign transcripts to determine how previous courses transfer. Contacting admissions offices early helps you understand requirements and maximize the credits you can bring with you.

If you need to change your status to F-1, you’ll need an I-20 from a SEVP-certified school before traveling or enrolling. Working with an immigration attorney or the school’s international office can make the process smoother and reduce risks.
