I recently moved from Belarus to Iowa on a student visa, and I’m starting to worry about what happens after I finish my studies. I hear some people apply for OPT, while others try for an H-1B or even a green card if they qualify. I’d like to build a future here, but I don’t know which option makes sense or how realistic it is in a state like Iowa where the job market is smaller compared to big cities. What paths should I be thinking about?

You can start with OPT after your studies, then explore whether an employer in Iowa is willing to sponsor you for H-1B. That’s usually the next step for many students.

Yes, OPT is the most immediate option, and after that your chances depend heavily on finding an employer sponsor.

Your timeline will matter a lot. OPT gives you up to a year of work authorization (three if you’re in a STEM field), so it’s often the first move. H-1B visas are competitive, but universities and certain nonprofits in Iowa can sometimes sponsor outside of the lottery, which might give you an advantage if you stay in academia or research.

Long-term options like marriage to a U.S. citizen or an employment-based green card also exist, though those require very specific circumstances.

It’s smart to start talking to your school’s international office and potential employers early, so you’re not rushed when your status runs out.
