I recently arrived in the United States from France to visit my girlfriend, and I plan to stay for a few months. While I’m enjoying my time here, I’m starting to think about the possibility of extending my stay or even exploring ways to live here longer-term if things go well. What are my options for changing my visitor status, and what steps should I take to do so legally without jeopardizing my current or future eligibility to stay in the U.S.?

You cannot work or study full-time on a visitor visa. Any extension or status change must be approved by USCIS before your current stay expires.

If you want to stay longer, you could apply to extend your B-2 visa or change to another visa category, such as a student or fiancé visa. Each option has specific requirements and timelines. Filing the application on time is crucial to remain in lawful status.

You’ll need to gather proof of your relationship and financial documents to show you can support them in the U.S. Once the petition is approved, your family members will apply for immigrant visas at the U.S. consulate in Turkey. They must also undergo medical exams and background checks. Consulting an immigration attorney can help ensure your application is accurate and complete.
