I moved from Honduras to Florida eight months ago on a Temporary Protected Status (TPS) grant after the hurricanes that hit my country. I’ve settled in with a job and an apartment, but now I’m hearing rumors that TPS might end for Honduras soon. I’m scared of what happens if the program is terminated. Will I have to leave immediately, or can I apply for something else to stay legally in the U.S.?

If TPS for Honduras ends, there will be a set deadline before your status officially expires. You won’t be removed overnight. USCIS usually gives a grace period for people to explore other options.

Many Honduran TPS holders look into family petitions, employment-based visas, or asylum if they fear returning. If you have U.S. citizen relatives, even distant ones, talk to an attorney to see if sponsorship is possible.

Some people also shift to student or work visas if they qualify. Planning now will give you more time to act before the TPS deadline.

When TPS is terminated, the government announces the end date months in advance. During that window, you can apply for other immigration benefits if you meet the eligibility criteria.

Common options include adjustment through marriage to a U.S. citizen, employment-based petitions, or asylum if you fear persecution back home.

Consulting an experienced immigration lawyer early is critical. Acting before TPS officially expires protects you from falling out of status.
