I just moved to the U.S. from Russia on an immigrant visa. What should I do in my first 30 to 60 days to make sure I stay in good standing with immigration?

Make sure you receive your green card in the mail. If it doesn’t arrive within 45 days of entry, contact USCIS to check the status. You should also apply for a Social Security number if you didn’t receive one automatically.

Update your U.S. address with USCIS using Form AR-11 within 10 days of moving. This helps ensure you receive official notices and keeps you in compliance with reporting requirements.

Start building your life here by opening a bank account, applying for state ID or a driver’s license, and keeping records of rent, work, or school. These documents help show continuous residence, which is important for future applications like naturalization.
