I heard it is possible that they will not allow someone with visitor visa to stay for up to 6 months. Is this true?

CBP had the final say, so it's possible.

If visa officers have a reason to doubt your intention or ability to sponsor yourself for that long, they may shorten your stay

The standard duration of stay is 6 months. If CBP makes it shorter, it will be for a valid reason.
