I entered the U.S. without inspection years ago. I now have U.S.-citizen children and want to fix my status. Do I have any options, or is leaving the country my only choice?

This is a complex situation. Leaving the U.S. can trigger long bars to reentry, so it’s important to understand risks before traveling.

Some people qualify for waivers, like a provisional unlawful presence waiver, if they have a qualifying relative.

U.S.-citizen children alone don’t automatically fix status, but they can matter later.
