I came to the U.S. on a B-2 visitor visa from Brazil and later married a U.S. citizen. People tell me different things about adjusting status. Can I apply for a green card without leaving the country?

In most cases, yes. Immediate relatives of U.S. citizens can usually adjust status inside the U.S., even if they entered on a visitor visa, as long as the entry was lawful.

The main concern is intent. If you genuinely entered as a visitor and later decided to marry, adjustment is generally allowed. Misrepresentation at entry can cause problems.

Many couples successfully adjust this way. Filing forms correctly and providing proof of a real marriage is critical. Some people choose to consult an attorney for peace of mind.
