I came to the U.S. from Uzbekistan about seven years ago for school, and I’ve been here ever since on an F-1 visa. I’m close to finishing my master’s degree and really want to start working after graduation. What options do I have to work legally in the U.S. once I complete my program, and how soon can I apply for them?

You can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows F-1 students to work in their field for up to 12 months after graduation. If your degree is in a STEM field, you might qualify for a 24-month extension.

After graduation, you can work under OPT, and later your employer may sponsor you for an H-1B visa. Make sure to apply for OPT before completing your studies to stay in legal status.

Your main option is to apply for OPT as soon as you’re within 90 days of finishing your degree. This lets you gain work experience in your field while maintaining your F-1 status. If your employer is willing, they can later file for an H-1B visa to help you stay long-term.
