I came to the U.S. from Romania on a visitor visa to attend my cousin’s graduation, and I’ve completely fallen in love with the country, the people, the education system, everything. Now I’m seriously considering staying to study here and possibly settling down later. Is it possible to change my status from a visitor visa to a student visa while I’m still in the U.S., or do I need to return home first to apply?

Yes, it’s possible to change your status from a visitor visa (B-2) to a student visa (F-1) while you’re still in the U.S. You’ll need to apply through USCIS before your current visa expires.

You must first get accepted by a SEVP-approved school and obtain a Form I-20 before filing Form I-539 to change your visa status. Timing is very important, you can’t start school until your change of status is approved. Some students choose to return home and apply for the F-1 visa through consular processing for a faster decision.

If your visitor visa was issued for a short stay, changing your intent too soon might raise red flags with USCIS. To strengthen your case, clearly document your genuine educational plans and financial ability to support yourself. Make sure not to overstay your visa while waiting for a decision. Speaking with an immigration attorney can help ensure you follow the correct process without affecting future visa eligibility.
