I came to the United States from Greece about four years ago. Unfortunately, I didn’t renew my immigration papers for over a year, and now I’m undocumented. I’m worried about what this means for me and if there’s any way to fix my situation without leaving the country. What steps can I take to regain legal status?

You may be able to apply for status through family or employment if you qualify. It’s important to speak with an immigration attorney right away to explore your options.

Depending on your situation, options like adjustment of status, asylum, or cancellation of removal might be possible. If you have U.S. citizen relatives, that could open additional paths. Avoid travel outside the U.S. until you’ve spoken to a legal professional.

Since you’ve been out of status for more than a year, leaving the U.S. could trigger a re-entry ban. However, there may still be ways to fix your situation inside the country. For instance, marriage to a U.S. citizen or certain humanitarian programs could help. A licensed immigration lawyer can assess your eligibility and guide you safely through next steps.
