I came from Sierra Leone a few years ago and I’ve been living in Illinois since then. Recently, I received a notice about being placed in removal proceedings, which has left me very worried. Someone mentioned that I might qualify for a deportation waiver depending on my situation, but I don’t fully understand what that means or how it works. Can a deportation waiver really help me stay in the U.S., and what factors would determine if I qualify?

A deportation waiver can help if you meet certain conditions, like showing extreme hardship to a U.S. citizen or permanent resident family member.

Eligibility depends on factors such as your immigration history, family ties, and whether you’ve committed certain violations. Each waiver is specific, so you’d need to know which one applies to you.

In many cases, deportation waivers are granted when someone can prove that removal would cause significant hardship to close family members. Other considerations include your past record, ties to your community, and humanitarian grounds. It’s important to have legal guidance since the process is complex and time-sensitive.

A deportation waiver can help you stay in the U.S. if you prove extreme hardship to a U.S. citizen or resident family member and meet other eligibility criteria.
