I arrived in Wisconsin on a visiting visa from India to spend time with family and explore life in the U.S. My stay has been meaningful, but the visa expiration date is approaching, and I’m worried about what happens next. If I want to avoid problems and possibly extend my stay, what steps should I take?

You should file Form I-539 to request a visitor visa extension before your current visa expires.

U.S. immigration law requires you to maintain lawful status while you’re here. Filing for an extension before your visa ends is essential to avoid being marked as overstaying. If you overstay, it could affect future visa applications.

You’ll need to show strong reasons for your extension request, such as medical, family, or travel needs, along with proof that you can financially support yourself.

Evidence like return flight bookings or bank statements often helps. The decision is not guaranteed, so applying early increases your chances. If your extension is denied, you should be prepared to leave before the deadline.
