I applied for asylum and have been waiting a long time for an interview or decision. During this period, my personal circumstances have changed significantly, including employment and family responsibilities. I’m unsure what I’m allowed to do while waiting and what could negatively affect my case. What are the most important things asylum applicants should and should not do while their case is still pending?

While waiting for an asylum decision, maintaining compliance with all immigration requirements is critical. Applicants should attend all appointments, keep their address updated, and avoid any criminal activity. Working without authorization or traveling without permission can seriously harm a case. On the positive side, applying for a work permit once eligible can help stabilize your life while you wait.

Many asylum cases take years, and life doesn’t pause during that time. It’s important to document changes in your situation, especially anything that strengthens your claim. However, actions like leaving the U.S. without advance permission or returning to a place tied to your fear can raise red flags. Staying informed and cautious protects your case.

I learned that patience and consistency matter most. I kept copies of everything I submitted and avoided risky decisions. Waiting was difficult, but staying compliant helped my case move forward without added problems.
