I am on an H-1B visa, and my employer filed an extension. My visa stamp has expired. Can I travel internationally and return to the U.S.?

You can only return to the U.S. if you have a valid visa stamp. An expired stamp requires that you apply for a new H-1B visa at a U.S. consulate abroad before reentry. Carry your I-797 approval notice, recent pay stubs, and employment verification letters to demonstrate your ongoing employment. Delays at consulates and visa appointment availability should be considered when planning travel. Traveling without a valid visa stamp may lead to denial at the port of entry, so timing and preparation are crucial.

Even with an approved extension, you cannot use the old stamp to reenter. Consulates may request additional documentation or interviews, especially if your current visa status has changed or there are long gaps in employment. Planning ahead is essential, and consulting an immigration attorney can ensure you meet all requirements. Make sure all travel documents are current, and avoid leaving the U.S. without proper authorization to prevent complications with your H-1B status or future extensions.
