I am on an H-1B visa, and my employer filed an extension. My visa stamp has expired. Can I travel internationally and return to the U.S.?

You can travel internationally on an H-1B visa if you have a valid visa stamp in your passport. If your visa has expired, you will need to obtain a new H-1B stamp at a U.S. consulate abroad before returning. Traveling without a valid stamp can result in being denied entry. Make sure you carry your approval notice (I-797), recent pay stubs, and other supporting documentation. Planning ahead is critical, as visa appointment wait times vary and processing delays can occur.

If you leave the U.S. with an expired H-1B visa, you cannot reenter until a new visa is issued. While your extension is approved, entry requires a valid stamp. Many travelers schedule consulate appointments early and bring all supporting documents, including proof of employment, previous H-1B approval, and a valid passport. Consulting your employer or an immigration attorney before travel can prevent unexpected denial at the border.
