I am married to a U.S. citizen, but my green card application is still pending. Can I apply for a work permit?

Yes, as a spouse of a U.S. citizen with a pending adjustment of status application, you are generally eligible for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). Filing Form I-765 along with or after your adjustment application allows you to work legally while waiting for your green card. Processing usually takes several months, but having an EAD ensures your employment is authorized during the waiting period.

Applying for a work permit while your adjustment application is pending is common and encouraged for spouses of U.S. citizens. The EAD not only allows legal employment but also helps maintain financial stability during the process. Ensure you submit the correct category on the form and include your receipt notices. Once approved, your EAD is valid for a limited period and can be renewed if needed until your green card is issued.
