I am from Nigeria and planning to move with my family to Mississippi soon. We are currently working on our visa applications, but I feel overwhelmed by the many rules and requirements. My biggest concern is whether we will be able to adjust our status once we arrive, or if we should apply for permanent residency before leaving Nigeria. I’ve also heard that mistakes in the application process could cause delays or even lead to denials, which worries me because my children’s schooling and our family’s stability depend on this move. What is the best legal pathway forward?

You can apply for an immigrant visa through family or employment sponsorship before entering the U.S., which is usually smoother than adjusting after arrival. The right choice depends on your eligibility category.

Starting the residency process from Nigeria often prevents complications later with status adjustments in the U.S.

Many Nigerian families choose to complete immigrant visa processing through the U.S. consulate before moving, since it avoids the risk of overstaying a temporary visa. Adjustment of status is an option only if you qualify after arrival, but it may involve longer waiting times and more complex paperwork. If you already have a sponsoring employer or close U.S. citizen relative, consular processing is often recommended. Each path has benefits and risks, so timing, sponsorship, and your family’s priorities matter.
