I am from China and currently living in Minnesota. My student visa is still valid, but I want to know if there are any options to work legally while studying here. What should I be aware of before applying for a job?

International students can sometimes work on-campus without needing special permission beyond their F-1 status. If you want to work off-campus, you may need CPT or OPT authorization from your school and USCIS. Always make sure you follow the rules to avoid affecting your immigration status.

Your Designated School Official (DSO) is the first person you should talk to. They can explain work options and confirm if your program allows CPT or OPT. Never start working before receiving the proper approval, as unauthorized employment can cause serious problems with your visa.

If your financial situation has changed unexpectedly, you may be able to request work authorization due to severe economic hardship. This requires showing strong evidence and getting permission from USCIS. Keep strong documentation and follow the lawful process to protect your student status.
