I am from Armenia and currently living in Idaho, where I want to understand the rules about working as a professional driver. Since I don’t yet have permanent residency, I’m unsure if I qualify for a commercial driver’s license or even a basic driving privilege card. What immigration status is actually required to legally work as a driver here?

In Idaho, a commercial driver’s license (CDL) is usually only available to U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents. Some temporary visa holders with valid work authorization may qualify, but not all.

Idaho law generally limits CDLs to citizens and green card holders, so without permanent residency your options are restricted. Some immigrants with certain categories of work authorization may be able to drive for non-commercial purposes using a standard license, but even that depends on your status.

Idaho does not offer a driving privilege card for undocumented residents, unlike some states. If your current visa includes employment authorization, you could use that to apply for a regular license.

Without authorization, you cannot work as a driver legally.

To drive for work in Idaho, you need both legal status and proof of employment authorization.
