I am from Albania and currently living in New Jersey with my family. Recently, I received a Notice to Appear in immigration court for removal proceedings, and I am very worried about what this means for my future. I have been in the U.S. for several years, and although I do not have a green card, I do have strong ties here, including my spouse and children who depend on me. I want to understand what options I might have to fight deportation. Can I apply for asylum, cancellation of removal, or adjustment of status, and what are my chances?

If you fear returning to Albania due to persecution, you may be eligible to apply for asylum. If not, cancellation of removal or another form of relief could be possible depending on your family and history.

Your options depend heavily on your immigration history, family ties, and whether you qualify for relief like asylum or cancellation of removal.

Facing deportation does not automatically mean you will be removed; immigration court gives you the chance to present a defense. If you have lived in the U.S. for more than 10 years, have good moral character, and your removal would cause hardship to U.S. citizen family members, cancellation of removal may be an option. Asylum could also be pursued if you fear persecution in Albania. Adjustment of status might apply if you are eligible through family or employment sponsorship. Each defense requires strong evidence, so legal representation is critical to improve your chances.
