I am from Albania and came to the United States with my parents about five years ago. They have since returned home, but I stayed behind to continue my education, and I am now enrolled at a university here. My student status keeps me in legal standing for now, but I wonder what options I realistically have for building a more permanent future in the U.S. Do I need to wait until after my studies to start, or are there immigration pathways I can begin exploring while still a student?

You don’t have to wait until graduation, you can start planning now. Some students apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT) to work temporarily in the U.S. after studies and later explore longer-term options.

Your options depend on your career plans and immigration goals. Many students transition from F-1 status to work visas, like H-1B, if an employer is willing to sponsor them. Over time, this sponsorship may lead to a green card pathway.`

If you want something permanent, consider whether you have U.S. citizen relatives who could petition for you, as family-based sponsorship is a strong route. Employment sponsorship after graduation is also possible, though it can be competitive. Staying in good status during school is very important. Exploring your options early will help you decide which path is most realistic for you.

You don’t have to wait—while on an F-1 visa, you can start planning for OPT, CPT, or future sponsorship, and even explore family-based or employment-based green card options
