I am afraid to return to my home country because of threats related to my political opinion and membership in a particular social group. I entered the United States less than one year ago. How do I know if I qualify for asylum, and what deadlines or evidence requirements should I be aware of?

To qualify for asylum, you must demonstrate a well-founded fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. Generally, you must apply within one year of entering the United States unless exceptions apply. Supporting evidence may include personal affidavits, country condition reports, witness statements, and documentation of past harm. The process includes biometrics, an interview or court hearing, and detailed questioning about your claims.

Asylum claims require credible testimony and consistency in describing past persecution or fear of future harm. You must show that your government is unable or unwilling to protect you. Delays in filing may require proof of extraordinary or changed circumstances. Because asylum decisions heavily depend on credibility and documentation, preparation and clarity are essential.
