The initial H-1B is valid for 3 years and can be extended for another 3 years, up to 6 years total.

In certain Green Card cases, extensions beyond 6 years are allowed under AC21 rules.

After 6 years, you must leave the U.S. or switch to another visa unless you qualify for an exception.
