How long can someone remain in H-1B status, and are extensions possible beyond six years?

The standard maximum period in H-1B status is six years, typically granted in three-year increments. However, certain extensions beyond six years are available if the individual has an employment-based green card process underway. For example, if a PERM labor certification or I-140 petition has been pending for at least 365 days, one-year extensions may be granted.
