Hi, I’m from South Korea and currently studying in Delaware on an F-1 student visa. I have an idea for a small online clothing business I want to run in my free time. Am I allowed to start and operate a business while on an F-1 visa?

Unfortunately, no. F-1 students are not allowed to run their own business or engage in self-employment while in the U.S. It could be considered unauthorized employment and might lead to visa issues. Even an online business can be risky if you’re actively managing it.

You can’t legally work for yourself on F-1, but some students set up a company and wait until they’re on OPT or STEM OPT to actively run it. If you really want to pursue this idea, you could plan ahead and launch once you have work authorization.
