Hi, I’m from Japan and I recently married my U.S. citizen partner. We just filed the I-130 and I-485 for my green card. Can I start working in the U.S. while we wait for the process to finish?

You can’t legally work until you receive your Employment Authorization Document. When you filed the I-485, you should have also submitted Form I-765 for the EAD. Once that’s approved, usually in less than 6 months, you can start working.

No, not yet. You have to wait for your work permit. If you work before that, it could cause problems with your green card. Some people get their EAD faster if they do the online combo filing, so hopefully you did that. Just be patient.

An acquaintance of mine did the same recently. They filed everything in February and got their work permit in July. Until then, they just stayed home and waited. It’s hard, but you need to wait for that card before you can legally take any job. Once you get it, you’re good to go!

Since you filed the I-485, you should apply for a work permit (Form I-765) too, that way, you can start working legally once it's approved while your green card is still processing.
