Hi, I’m from Armenia and I’m a U.S. green card holder (not a citizen yet). I want to bring my fiancée from Armenia to the U.S. so we can get married. Can I sponsor her for a visa, or do I need to wait until I become a citizen?

As a green card holder, you can’t file a K-1 fiancé visa. But you can get married first and then file an I-130 for a spouse. It takes longer than if you were a citizen, but it’s still possible.

You’ll need to become a citizen first if you want to bring her on a K-1 visa. Otherwise, marry her outside the U.S. and file for a marriage-based immigrant visa. Processing times for spouses of green card holders are slower (often 1–2 years), but once you naturalize, you can upgrade her case to speed it up.

To bring your fiancée to the U.S. for marriage as a green card holder, you would need to get married first (either in Armenia or a third country) and then file Form I-130 to petition for her as your spouse.
