Having moved from Ethiopia to Arkansas last year, I recently finished my degree and I’m now looking for a job that fits my skills. But I’m not sure what my work options are under my current visa. Can I apply for jobs freely, or do I need specific authorization first before starting any employment?

It depends on your visa type, some visas allow employment, while others do not.

If you’re on an F-1 student visa, you may need Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Curricular Practical Training (CPT) authorization before working. For other visa types like H-1B, employment must be sponsored by your employer. Always check your visa’s specific terms before applying.

Unauthorized work can affect your immigration status. Before starting any job, confirm eligibility through your Designated School Official (DSO) or an immigration attorney to avoid issues.
