Having arrived from Somalia just last month for an early resumption on my program in the United States, I’m still trying to understand how my immigration status affects what I’m allowed to do while I’m here. Classes officially start later in the year, but I came early to prepare, settle in, and handle some academic requirements. Am I allowed to engage in certain campus activities, work limited hours, or travel within the U.S. before the official program start date without violating my status?

What you’re allowed to do depends on the exact visa you used to enter and the regulations attached to it. Many student visas restrict employment and certain activities before the official program start date.

If your activities stay limited to meetings, negotiations, and market research, the B-1 visa works well for short visits. But if you plan to open a U.S. branch, hire staff, or manage operations, visas like the E-2 or L-1 might fit better depending on your business structure. It’s best to evaluate your investment size and long-term goals first.

Travel within the U.S. is usually allowed as long as you remain in valid status and keep your documents updated. However, working or engaging in unauthorized practical training before the program start could create immigration issues. Your DSO can clarify what is permitted during this early period. Staying informed now helps prevent problems later in your studies.
