Having already served in my country’s armed forces, I’m exploring whether military experience can open doors in the United States. I’m interested in jobs connected to the U.S. Army and want to know if non-citizens can enlist, what immigration status is required, and whether prior service abroad helps or limits eligibility in any way.

Generally, only U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents can enlist in the U.S. Army.

Foreign military experience does not allow direct enlistment, but it can be valuable later for civilian defense-related jobs. Immigration status must come first before any military path is possible.

Some non-citizens with green cards may enlist, but options are limited and policies change. Programs that once fast-tracked service members to citizenship are currently restricted. Speaking with an immigration attorney and an Army recruiter is essential before making plans.
