For the past year, I’ve been in a committed relationship with my boyfriend, who is a U.S. citizen, while I continue living in Finland. He has visited me once here, and we also met in another country during a trip together. We’re serious about each other, but we are not currently planning a wedding and are still figuring out where the relationship is headed long term. Given our situation, is there any way I could use this relationship as a basis for U.S. immigration now, even without being engaged or married?

No, a dating relationship alone does not qualify as a basis for U.S. immigration benefits.

U.S. immigration law recognizes engagement and marriage, not boyfriend-girlfriend relationships, for family-based petitions. Without an engagement leading to a K-1 fiancé visa or a marriage-based petition, there is no immigration category available through your relationship at this stage.

If you later decide to marry, your U.S. citizen partner could file a spousal petition for you, or you could pursue a K-1 fiancé visa if you become engaged. Both options require proof of a genuine relationship and intent to marry. Until then, you would need to qualify independently through work, study, or another visa category.
