Ever since I arrived in New York from Lebanon, I’ve been trying to figure out how to continue my academic path here. I was halfway through a degree back home, and now I’m hoping to transfer my credits, enroll in a program, or even start fresh at a U.S. university. I’m confused about how my immigration status affects my ability to study and what steps I should take to move forward academically. What should someone in my situation know before applying to schools?

Your ability to study depends on the type of visa or status you currently hold. Some statuses allow full-time study, while others require switching to an F-1 student visa before enrolling. It’s important to check whether your current status permits academic enrollment so you avoid any violations.

Many schools will evaluate your foreign transcripts, but the process varies by institution. You may need a credential evaluation to determine how your Lebanese coursework transfers into the U.S. system. Reaching out to admissions advisors early helps you understand what documents they need and how many credits can be accepted.

If you need to change your status to an F-1, you’ll first need to be accepted into a SEVP-certified school and receive an I-20. Processing times and requirements can vary, so starting the planning process early is key. An immigration attorney or school international student office can guide you through the safest route.
