Does living abroad for many years cause someone to automatically lose U.S. citizenship?

No, simply living outside the United States even for an extended period does not automatically result in loss of citizenship. U.S. citizens may reside abroad indefinitely without forfeiting nationality. However, they remain subject to certain obligations, such as filing U.S. tax returns regardless of residence. Abandonment of citizenship requires voluntary action with intent to relinquish nationality, not mere absence.
