Completing my master’s degree feels like a major milestone, especially after already spending years in the U.S. for college and graduate school. As I look ahead, I am actively searching for PhD opportunities and want to make sure my immigration status stays secure during this transition. The timing between programs and admission decisions worries me. What should I be aware of regarding visas, gaps between studies, and staying compliant while pursuing a PhD in the United States?

If you plan to continue on an F-1 visa, you must maintain status without long gaps between programs. A new Form I-20 from the PhD institution is required before starting the next program.

Some schools allow a short gap or authorized break if properly reported. Transferring your SEVIS record on time is important to avoid status issues. You should confirm timelines with your international student office.

If there will be a longer gap, you may need to leave the U.S. and reenter with a new visa. Admission offers and funding letters are key documents. Planning early helps prevent accidental violations.
