Can someone on an F-1 visa apply for permanent residency?

No, you cannot apply for a Green Card just because you’re an F-1 student. The F-1 is a non-immigrant visa, which means you must show intent to return home after your studies. If you later become eligible for an immigrant category, you must adjust your status through USCIS while maintaining valid legal status.

Yes, it’s possible, but not directly through the F-1 visa. You must first change your status or qualify under another immigration category for example: Marriage to a U.S. citizen or Employer sponsorship (through an H-1B work visa leading to a Green Card).
