Back home in Pakistan, I was part of a small activist group that advocated for women’s education, and because of that I started receiving threats. I left last year and I’m now living in Vermont on a temporary status, but I feel unsafe about the idea of returning. Some friends here suggested I should consider applying for asylum, but I’m not sure how much time I have left to do so, or what kind of proof I would need. Can I still apply even after several months in the U.S.?

Yes, you can apply, but asylum must usually be filed within one year of your arrival. You’ll need to explain why you fear returning and provide as much evidence as possible to support your claim. Testimonies, documents, and even witness letters can be useful.

As long as you are still within one year of entering the U.S., you can apply. If you’re beyond that, you’d need to show exceptional circumstances for the delay.

You’re allowed to apply for asylum even if several months have already passed, as long as you’re still within the one-year deadline. If more than a year has gone by, you’d need to explain special reasons for missing it.

Strong evidence of your activism and threats in Pakistan will strengthen your case.
