As someone originally from India and now living in Maryland, I'm trying to understand how my current nonimmigrant status might affect my chances of getting a green card in the future. I’ve heard that certain visas, like H-1B, allow for "dual intent," while others, like the F-1 student visa, do not. If I’m on a visa that doesn't allow dual intent, does applying for a green card harm my current status? What steps can I take to legally adjust my status without violating immigration rules or facing denial? I want to stay compliant while planning for long-term residence.

Visas like the F-1 don’t allow dual intent, so applying for a green card may raise red flags unless you're careful. Be mindful of timing too.

One option is to switch to an H-1B or another dual-intent visa before applying for a green card. It offers more flexibility and fewer risks.

To stay compliant, consult with an attorney before filing any green card petitions. They’ll help structure your case to avoid status violations.
