As a lawful permanent resident building my life in the United States, family support matters a lot to me. My mother is over 70 years old and lives alone, and I want her to come live with me so I can care for her properly. What immigration options exist for bringing an elderly parent to the US, and what limits should I be aware of as a green card holder?

As a green card holder, you cannot directly petition for a parent. Only US citizens aged 21 or older can sponsor parents for permanent residence.

If you later become a US citizen, you may file a petition for your mother immediately, without visa backlogs. Age alone does not disqualify her, but medical exams and financial sponsorship requirements will apply. Timing your naturalization is often key in these cases.

In the meantime, a visitor visa may be an option, though approval can be difficult due to immigrant intent concerns. She must show strong ties to her home country and intent to return. Speaking with an immigration attorney can help you plan both short term and long term strategies.
