Arriving from Delhi, India, I’ve been living in Wyoming for the past six months on a short-term program that allows me to stay in the U.S. for a total of eight months. The time here has opened up new opportunities, especially with a possible internship and some professional networking that could lead to a career path I didn’t expect. Now I’m worried because my authorized stay is coming closer to the end, and I don’t want to risk any immigration issues. Is there a way to extend my stay or change my status without leaving the U.S.? And what should I start doing immediately?

You may be able to apply for an extension or change of status with USCIS depending on other opportunities you have, like a job offer or a family member who can sponsor you.

You may be able to file a request with USCIS to extend your current status or change to another visa category before your authorized stay expires. The key is to apply early and ensure you maintain lawful status throughout the process. A strong reason and supporting documentation are required.

Do not wait until the last minute. file your extension or change-of-status application as soon as possible.

If you find a qualifying internship or job, an employer could sponsor you for a different visa category. However, they would need to meet specific requirements and file the petition in time. You can also consult with an immigration attorney to understand the best path for your specific situation. Staying proactive and compliant is the most important step.
