After spending my very first year outside Lithuania here in the United States, I’ve realized how much I want to experience an American Christmas for the first time. The challenge is that my authorized period of stay is set to expire next week, and I’m unsure what options, if any, I have to extend my time legally. I don’t want to violate my status, but I also don’t want to miss the chance to enjoy the holidays before returning home. What steps could someone in my situation explore to remain compliant while hoping to stay a bit longer?

You may be able to file for an extension of stay with USCIS if you have a valid reason and your status allows it. Filing before your authorized stay expires is critical.

If an extension isn’t possible, it’s important to depart on time to avoid accruing unlawful presence. You can always plan to return in the future with a new visa.

Speak with an immigration attorney or your school/employer sponsor immediately. They can help you understand your options based on your specific visa type and deadlines.
