After moving to Alabama from Afghanistan on a student visa, I’ve started to think more seriously about what comes after my degree program finishes. The rules I’ve read mention that students are usually required to go back to their home country once their studies end, but I’ve also heard of cases where people are able to stay. Can anyone clarify whether there are legal ways to remain in the U.S. after graduation?

Yes, student visas are temporary, and technically you’re expected to leave once your program ends. But there are exceptions if you take the right legal steps.

You could apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows you to work in your field for a set period after school. Some students also switch to work visas like the H-1B if they find an employer willing to sponsor them.

Marriage to a U.S. citizen or another change of status may also provide options.

Without a legal extension or change of status, you must return home when your student visa period ends.
