After moving from Zambia to Florida six months ago, I’m still trying to understand how to adjust my immigration status so I can stay longer and maybe start working legally. What are my options for extending my stay or changing my status before my current visa expires?

You may be eligible to apply for a change or extension of status with USCIS, depending on your visa type. It’s best to apply before your current status expires.

Your options depend on why you originally came and the kind of visa you hold. Some people can switch to student, work, or family-based categories. Speaking with an immigration attorney will help you understand which option best fits your situation.

If you’re planning to stay longer, you must apply to extend or change your status before your authorized stay ends. USCIS reviews such requests carefully, especially if your reasons are tied to education, employment, or family. Make sure your passport and immigration documents remain valid. Gather supporting evidence for your reason to stay. Filing early and correctly can prevent future immigration problems.
