After moving from South Africa to Florida on a B-2 visitor visa, I’ve realized I’d like to explore options for staying longer—potentially to study, work, or even adjust status if eligible. But I’m confused about what’s actually allowed while on a tourist visa. Some people have warned me about overstaying or applying for the wrong thing too quickly, while others say a change of status is possible if I do it properly. What are the safest and most realistic ways to transition from a B-2 visa to a more permanent or long-term status in the U.S.?

You can apply for a change of status (e.g., to F-1 for study or another visa) before your B-2 expires, but USCIS must receive your application while you're still in status.

You cannot work on a B-2 visa, and applying for work authorization without the right visa can lead to serious consequences, including denial of future applications.

If you marry a U.S. citizen while in the U.S. on a B-2 visa, you may be eligible to adjust status, but timing matters. Applying too soon after entry could trigger suspicion of visa fraud, so always seek legal advice.
